Halfpenny House is a bespoke five-bedroom Passive House designed by Hawkes Architecture under the exceptional rural design planning policy commonly associated with Paragraph 80. The architectural design takes inspiration from traditional agricultural barns, reinterpreting their simple forms and proportions through a contemporary approach. The building has been carefully positioned within the existing farmyard, respecting the surrounding structures while creating a strong connection between the property and the wider landscape.

Central to the project is its Passive House design, an approach to construction that focuses on achieving exceptional energy efficiency and year-round thermal comfort while significantly reducing the need for conventional heating and cooling. This is achieved through a highly insulated and airtight building envelope, high-performance glazing, careful detailing to minimise thermal bridging and a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery. Together, these elements help maintain consistent internal temperatures, provide a continuous supply of fresh air and minimise energy consumption.
